SCHERF FARMS is a family owned and operated dairy / creamery
located near Michigan City, Indiana. Peter and Rhonda Scherf produce
your milk from start to finsh. From feeding and milking the cows to
filling the milk bottles we personally perform the whole operation.
You may be asking yourself, so what's special about Scherf Farms dairy products. We are unique from many other dairies and creameries in Indiana, here's how:
#1 - MILK FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION
We are offering on farm processed Grade A milk for human consumption. We do not sell milk under the guize of pet food to avoid state and federal safety regulations.
#2 - LOW TEMPERATURE PASTEURIZATION
We use Low Temperature pasteurization. Our low temperature pasteurization method leaves the most beneficial bacteria and proteins in tact while assuring you the milk you are serving your family is safe to drink. Most producers use High Temperature Short Time or Ultra High Temperature Short Time pasteurization. These methods kill more of the beneficial bacteria in the milk.
#3 - CREAM LINE MILK
Our milk is not homogenized. This is called cream line milk. Homogenization breaks up the fat in the milk to avoid the cream from settling to the top of bottle. Homogenization has been linked to poor digestibility of milk, cream line milk is said to be better for those with lactose intolerance.

#4 - PASTURE RAISED COWS
Our cows feed on pastures as often as mother nature permits. Many large dairy operations utilize total confinement methods which means the cows never see fresh grass.
#5 - JERSEY COWS
Our herd consist of only registered Jersey cows. Jersey cows produce milk higher in protein, flavor, and natural fat than the Holstein cows used by most large dairies.
#6 - NO HERBICIDES, PESTICIDES OR GMO SEED
We don't use herbicides or pestides on our fields nor do we plant GMO (Genetically modified organism) seed. When possible, any purchased feeds also follow these guidelines. Our goal is to be 100% herbicide, pesticide and GMO free.
#7 - NO GROWTH HORMONES
Our cows never receive growth hormones, period.
#8 - NO SUB-THERAPEUDIC ANTIBIOTICS
We never feed sub-therapeudic antibiotics. We will, however use anitbiotics to treat sick animals. We never vary from label or veterinarian directions and all treated animals are withdrawn from production per the manufacturers recommendations.
